A Story Of Attachment And Loss
Cast Away is a movie that follows the character of Chuck Noland. Chuck works for FedEx as a analyst who must oversee the productivity of FedEx offices around the world.
A FedEx cargo plane that Chuck hitches a ride on unexpectedly crashes in the Pacific Ocean. Chuck along with a deceased pilot of the plane wash up on the shore of a deserted island.
Despite being stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Chuck still holds on to his duties as a FedEx employee and is determined to deliver the packages.
At this point in the film Chuck is still grapling with the reality of his sutuation and believes he will be rescued.
After some time passes Chuck finds the will to survive and starts opening FedEx packages for their contents. Chuck unpackages a volley ball which, is completely useless in his situation.
After Chuck sustains a small injury he comes back the shore of the island enraged and throws the volley ball. This actions creates a handprint on the ball of his blood.
Due to the time Chuck has spent on the island he is desperate for human interaction and proceeds to make a face on the volley ball and start have conversations with the ball.
The ball has the words of the manufacturing company Wilson printed on to the ball. This prompts Chuck to give the ball the name of Wilson.
The movie jumps in time to a point in which Chuck has completely lost his mind. In his insanity he is not only talking to Wilson, but believes that Wilson is responding.
Chuck has made a tight bond with Wilson and he plans to take Wilson with him as he tries to escape the island.
After launching a makeshift raft into the ocean, Wilson falls of the raft within a couple of days into the voyage. As Wilson drifts away, Chuck notices too late and is unable to save Wilson.
Days after the incident Chuck is left still in greif and barely notices a large cargo ship passing by. He is finally saved and is returned to humanity.
Chuck makes it back to his wife to find that she had moved on since, Chuck was thought to be dead. Chuck even delievers one FedEx package he saved the whole time, highlighting his attachment to his job.
I think that Castaway though its symbolism makes several good statements on human attachment and emotion. I have left a list bellow of the credits of the movie.
